The Ohio Hardware Atlas
The Ohio Hardware Atlas is a free map of the Ohio organizations a founder can use to take a first hardware product to production. It covers circuit-board fabrication and assembly, prototyping and machining, test and compliance labs, funding programs, university and maker resources, and industry networks, with each organization’s city, what it does and a link. Kyros Engineering maintains it from public sources, and nobody paid to be listed.
For founders
How to use this map
Work through it in roughly the order you will need it. Each step links to its list.
- 1
Prototype in a makerspace
Sears think[box] in Cleveland is a free, public-access university makerspace, and the UC 1819 Innovation Hub in Cincinnati offers public memberships. Both have 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC and electronics equipment.
- 2
Have parts made
Prototyping bureaus print, cast and machine parts for prototypes and short runs, and injection molders take over once a design is ready for tooling.
- 3
Get boards built
A bare-board fab makes the circuit board and an assembly (EMS) shop places the parts. Many EMS shops also build cable harnesses and complete units, and several cover prototype quantities through production.
- 4
Test against the right standard
EMC, product safety, NRTL certification and medical-device biocompatibility are separate services. Confirm that a lab’s accreditation covers your standard before you book.
- 5
Fund the next stage
Ohio Third Frontier’s Technology Validation and Start-up Fund provides up to $200,000 to startups commercializing technology from Ohio research institutions. Seed investors are active in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, and incubators in Akron and Toledo offer lab and light-manufacturing space.
- 6
Find your people
IEEE sections in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati hold technical meetings, MAGNET and The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association work with manufacturers, and regional economic development organizations help companies expand.

Where Kyros fits
Kyros Engineering is a senior-led electronics and embedded-firmware firm in Beachwood, Ohio, and it sits upstream of most of this map: a principal engineer owns the architecture, circuit design, board layout and firmware that fabs, assembly shops and test labs then build and test.
Paid engagements start with the Architecture & Roadmap Study: two weeks, $5,000 fixed, ending in a written plan that covers a rough architecture, the parts carrying real risk and the forks in the roadmap. You keep it whether or not you hire us for the build.

About this map
Last updated: .
Kyros Engineering compiled this map and maintains it. Nobody paid to be listed, and a listing does not imply any relationship with Kyros. Entries are listed alphabetically within each category; the order is not a ranking.
Each entry comes from the organization’s own website, a public registry (OSHA’s NRTL program, FDA’s ASCA list, the A2LA directory) or published news coverage. Certifications are shown as each organization states them and have not been checked against registrar databases.
