What to look for

Start from your hardest constraint

The useful question is not “who is best” but “what will most likely sink this project.” Certification evidence, sensor accuracy, code quality, submission documentation, and cross-discipline handoffs are different problems, and different firms are genuinely better at each.

Ask who actually writes the code

Ask for the engineers by name before you sign, and ask what else they are on. If the impressive engineer from the sales call is not on the delivery plan, you bought a brochure. This applies to every firm on this page, including us.

Check hardware fluency, not just software

Firmware shops without electronics depth stall and blame the board. Ask how they root-cause a HardFault. The right answer involves a debugger and an oscilloscope on your hardware, not a rewrite.

Pin down the definition of done

A passing build is not a product. Ask what acceptance means: our answer is the device running its real function on real hardware, through power cycles and fault conditions. Get whatever their answer is in writing.

Confirm you own the output

Source, schematics, build system and documentation delivered into your repositories, with real knowledge transfer. Lock-in is a design choice — make sure it is not theirs.

When you need an independent audit of your own team’s code and process rather than a build partner, Barr Group is a better fit. When the gap is purely submission documentation for medical software, Promenade specializes in it. And if you need mechanical, electrical and software staffed in parallel on a large program, a bigger multi-discipline firm will carry it better than we will. We are a small senior team and we say so.

How should I actually compare firms like these?

Name the single thing most likely to sink the project, then pick the firm whose documented strength is that thing. Ask each one who will write the code, how they root-cause a hardware-level fault, what acceptance means, and what you own at handoff. Hourly rate is the least predictive variable — total cost is driven by rework, not day rates.

Why does this page name competitors?

Because almost every other "best embedded firmware companies" page is published by a firm that ranks itself first, which makes them useless to the person actually choosing. A guide that only recommends its author is an advertisement. We would rather be the page a buyer trusts and remembers than the one that claims every category.
