Four theories died first. One of them was ours.

Commercial water-treatment equipment — inherited STM32H7 firmware

A control board froze partway through every firmware update, at a different byte offset each time. We did not write this firmware. Four plausible theories were ruled out on real hardware before a probe we built read the fault out of the still-running core.
